Amthor International Train2Work Welding Course

Amthor International has partnered with Danville Community College (DCC) to create a welding course with the potential to work for Amthor after completion of the course. This is a non credit course offered through DCC and taught by Amthor International’s Operations Manager, Ronnie Farmer. This beginner’s course is designed to teach people who are interested in obtaining a new skill set in welding and possible employment with Amthor International. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a GMAW Certification with American Society of Mechanical Engineers and an opportunity to apply to Amthor International for employment. The course lasts for eight (8) weeks and meets on Mondays & Wednesdays from 5:00 – 8:00pm.

The Amthor International Train2Work course teaches Welding Gas Metal Arc Fillet Welding (Welding GMAW). This training course introduces semi-automatic welding processes with emphasis on practical applications. It includes the study of filler wires, fluxes, and gases. At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • know the differences between the most common welding technologies and the GMAW (MIG) welding process
  • learn the different shielding gases and the common types of wire and their costs
  • identify the most important parts of a MIG/MAG welding machine
  • know how to change the machine parameters and the working and consumable parts of the machine
  • make use of the most common edge preparations and the different weld joint designs
  • know how to weld mild steel with different techniques, positions and joints
  • identify welding defects and know how to correct them
  • make use of different grinding machines
  • know and use the proper safety procedures and equipment

To gain additional skills outside of the one course Amthor International Train2Work/ GMAW training course, students can enroll in the Welding Program (Certificate Program) offered through DCC.

The Train2Work course is location at the DCC main campus in the new Welding Facility. The space features all-new welding equipment, in addition to a new welding fabrication area where students can obtain hands-on experience with the process. The course lasts for 8 weeks and meets two nights a week for 3 hours. Students are encouraged not to miss any classes because of the fast pace of the training and the shortened length of the course. Seats for the class are limited to 16 students.

There are no prerequisites for this course. The ideal student is someone who is interested in welding, likes to work with their hands, and wants to learn new skills. There are several grants with the school and other partner organizations that will provide tuition funding for the training course. Other grants may be available for supportive services such as transportation assistance, child care, tool/uniform assistance, resume assistance and more. Tools are not included in the tuition for this course.

 

After completion of the course, students are encouraged to apply for employment at Amthor International. Students must go through normal hiring procedures including application, weld test, interview, background check, and drug screening. Our Vacuum Tanker Facility Expansion Plans

At Amthor International, we have built a reputation over the past 25 years as the best manufacturer of vacuum trucks in the country due to our commitment to safety, efficiency, and quality. However, you’ll never catch us resting on our laurels. We continuously strive to improve our business, which is why we are currently planning on reconfiguring our vacuum tanker fabrication department by expanding our facilities. Doing so should allow us to improve our productivity.

Our Vacuum Tanker Facility Expansion Plans

We are planning on rearranging and expanding our vacuum tanker department in order to both optimize our productivity and to streamline our process for manufacturing vacuum tankers. As part of our plans, we will add roughly 90,000 square feet of space to our existing vacuum tanker manufacturing facility, which is located in Gretna, VA.

Although the beginning construction date has yet to be set in stone, construction is expected to begin sometime during the summer. Once it’s started, we are hoping to complete our facility expansion within 90 to 120 days. Besides improving our ability to manufacture vacuum tankers in an efficient manner, the expansion of our facility should also help to add around a hundred jobs within the next five years.

DCC WELDING STUDENTS FIND GOOD JOBS CLOSE TO HOME AT AMTHOR INTERNATIONAL

Danville, Va., July 13, 2018 — A new fast-track aluminum welding class at Danville Community College is helping students find good local jobs after just a few weeks of study.

Six students who recently completed the first eight-week Welding GMAW class at DCC have already been hired by Amthor as the company expands its operations in Gretna. They are: Brandon Betterton, Steven Gauldin, Sheila Hughes, Stormy Hendrickson, Anthony Long, and Noah Richardson.

Amthor Operations Manager Ronnie Farmer, who started with the company as a tank welder when it began 25 years ago, teaches the non-credit welding course.

“We had a lot of fun. They applied their lessons really well,” he said of his first class.

Farmer will be teaching a second evening course 5-8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, August 27 – October 17 in DCC’s newly constructed welding facility, which features all new state-of-the-art equipment. Grant funding is available to qualifying students to cover tuition and may also be available for supportive services such as transportation assistance, child care, tool/uniform purchases, résumé assistance, and more.

There are no prerequisites for this course. The ideal student is interested in welding, likes to work with their hands, and wants to learn new skills. Students are encouraged not to miss any classes because of the fast pace of the training and the shortened length of the course.

Students who successfully complete the course will earn a GMAW Certification from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and are encouraged to apply for employment with Amthor International.

While taking the class does not guarantee an interview or employment, “Ronnie knows what Amthor needs and tailors his instruction accordingly,” said Amthor Human Resources Manager Adrienne James, noting that the company recently announced its expansion and has a need to hire more skilled workers, primarily in welding.

“We want to emphasize the importance of this partnership with DCC,” said Amthor Executive Vice President Brian Amthor. “We need skilled workers in order to grow our business. This class helps local workers gain valuable job skills in a short period of time so that we can continue to meet the growing demand for our products nationally and internationally.”

Amthor International Expands Production, Adds New Jobs and Introduces Amthor University Job Training Program

August 24, 2015, Gretna, VA — Amthor International is adding 30 new jobs to its 100-person workforce at its 86,000 square foot plant in Gretna, VA in order to meet the company’s production requirements. At the same time, the company is introducing a customized training program, “Amthor University,” in partnership with Virginia Technical Institute (VTI) to assist job seekers in gaining the required skills to be successful at Amthor.

“Amthor is a leader in our industry,” stated Brian Amthor, Vice President of Marketing.  “Due to our focus on quality, delivery, and product innovations, we have seen a growth in orders which has necessitated expanding our workforce in Gretna.”

Graduates of the Amthor University program at VTI will be guaranteed employment with Amthor upon successful completion of the training. The training program will last between four to five weeks. In partnership with the West Piedmont Workforce Investment Board and the Dan River Region Collaborative, all training costs will be covered for qualified applicants.

The first Amthor University class begins on October 5, 2015 with cohorts for electricians, mechanics, and tank cleaners in subsequent weeks.

“We are excited about this opportunity with VTI,” Amthor commented. “As we continue to grow, we need employees who have skills specific for our work. This training program will allow individuals without previous experience or training to gain the necessary skills to be hired by our company.”

If an applicant is already qualified for Amthor’s jobs, he/she may not be required to participate in the short-term training. The company will determine whether job applicants should complete the training program before employment.

Virginia Technical Institute offers hands-on training in a variety of fields including electrical, plumbing, heating and air, welding, pipe fitting, carpentry, masonry, multi-craft industrial maintenance, and project management.  VTI uses curriculum from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), which is a standardized training process affiliated with the University of Florida.  The Institute is also certified through the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).
