Train2Work Partnership with Danville Community College

Amthor International Train2Work Welding Course

Amthor International has partnered with Danville Community College (DCC) to create a welding course with the potential to work for Amthor after completion of the course. This is a non credit course offered through DCC and taught by Amthor International’s Operations Manager, Ronnie Farmer. This beginner’s course is designed to teach people who are interested in obtaining a new skill set in welding and possible employment with Amthor International. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a GMAW Certification with American Society of Mechanical Engineers and an opportunity to apply to Amthor International for employment. The course lasts for eight (8) weeks and meets on Mondays & Wednesdays from 5:00 – 8:00pm.

The Amthor International Train2Work course teaches Welding Gas Metal Arc Fillet Welding (Welding GMAW). This training course introduces semi-automatic welding processes with emphasis on practical applications. It includes the study of filler wires, fluxes, and gases. At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • know the differences between the most common welding technologies and the GMAW (MIG) welding process
  • learn the different shielding gases and the common types of wire and their costs
  • identify the most important parts of a MIG/MAG welding machine
  • know how to change the machine parameters and the working and consumable parts of the machine
  • make use of the most common edge preparations and the different weld joint designs
  • know how to weld mild steel with different techniques, positions and joints
  • identify welding defects and know how to correct them
  • make use of different grinding machines
  • know and use the proper safety procedures and equipment

To gain additional skills outside of the one course Amthor International Train2Work/ GMAW training course, students can enroll in the Welding Program (Certificate Program) offered through DCC.

The Train2Work course is location at the DCC main campus in the new Welding Facility. The space features all-new welding equipment, in addition to a new welding fabrication area where students can obtain hands-on experience with the process. The course lasts for 8 weeks and meets two nights a week for 3 hours. Students are encouraged not to miss any classes because of the fast pace of the training and the shortened length of the course. Seats for the class are limited to 16 students.

There are no prerequisites for this course. The ideal student is someone who is interested in welding, likes to work with their hands, and wants to learn new skills. There are several grants with the school and other partner organizations that will provide tuition funding for the training course. Other grants may be available for supportive services such as transportation assistance, child care, tool/uniform assistance, resume assistance and more. Tools are not included in the tuition for this course.

After completion of the course, students are encouraged to apply for employment at Amthor International. Students must go through normal hiring procedures including application, weld test, interview, background check, and drug screening. Amthor International does not guarantee employment or an interview after completing the course. Amthor International is an equal opportunity employer.

Our Flat Vac Mini Slide in Unit

When it comes to vacuum trucks, few manufacturers can offer the options that we can here at Amthor International. In fact, we even offer a flat vac mini slide-in unit for companies that need to empty out porta-potties but who don’t need large vacuum trucks to do the job. If this is the case for you, the flat vac mini slide-in unit is a much more cost-efficient option.

Our Flat Vac Mini Slide in Unit

Our flat vac mini slide-in unit is perfect for easy porta-potty servicing and is an entry-level unit. It’s a lot smaller than our typical vacuum trucks and can be slid into a basic pickup truck with ease. Besides being an economical option for smaller companies, the flat vac mini slide in unit is a great option for larger businesses as well. This is because it’s a good compliment to your normal fleet of vacuum trucks as its smaller size makes it great for hard to reach jobs.

While there are other slide-in units on the market, few have the innovative design as ours. This is because our flat vac mini slide in unit uses a revolutionary rectangular design that helps to eliminate blind spots, allowing drivers to see out their back windshield, thereby making it much safer and easier for drivers to operate. The low profile of the tank also results in a lower center of gravity, making the unit more aerodynamic, which in turn helps to prevent sloshing while the pump is in use and the tank is being transported.

Even though our flat vac mini slide-in unit is considered an entry-level unit, it still comes with the customizable options that customers have come to expect from our line of tanker trucks. These options include:

  • Steel, stainless steel and aluminum material
  • Multiple tank sizes starting at 300 gallons
  • Multiple compartment options
  • Several pump makes and models to choose from

Features on all of our flat vac mini slide-in units include the following:

  • Full-length baffles and bulkheads
  • An angled floor that allows for easy draining
  • A raised rear pump platform and a waste compartment discharge located beneath it
  • A two-inch inlet and a three-inch discharge
  • A 12V water pump
  • Two-inch suction hose with wand and valve

For more information about our flat vac mini slide in unit, be sure to contact us at Amthor International today.

Our Vacuum Tanker Facility Expansion Plans

At Amthor International, we have built a reputation over the past 25 years as the best manufacturer of vacuum trucks in the country due to our commitment to safety, efficiency, and quality. However, you’ll never catch us resting on our laurels. We continuously strive to improve our business, which is why we are currently planning on reconfiguring our vacuum tanker fabrication department by expanding our facilities. Doing so should allow us to improve our productivity.

Our Vacuum Tanker Facility Expansion Plans

We are planning on rearranging and expanding our vacuum tanker department in order to both optimize our productivity and to streamline our process for manufacturing vacuum tankers. As part of our plans, we will add roughly 90,000 square feet of space to our existing vacuum tanker manufacturing facility, which is located in Gretna, VA.

Although the beginning construction date has yet to be set in stone, construction is expected to begin sometime during the summer. Once it’s started, we are hoping to complete our facility expansion within 90 to 120 days. Besides improving our ability to manufacture vacuum tankers in an efficient manner, the expansion of our facility should also help to add around a hundred jobs within the next five years.

About Amthor International

We are extremely proud of the fact that we produce all of our tanker trucks in the United States. Besides the advantage of buying American, we also go to great lengths to customize our tanker trucks based on the specific needs of our clients.

As far as our vacuum trucks go, we build code and non-code tanks with stationary or dumping as well as full opening rear doors. Countless customization options are available, from the material of your choice to compartment sizes and more. One of the more unique features available on our line of vacuum trucks is the CLAW, which is a series of hydraulic arms that open and close the vacuum truck’s rear door, thereby eliminating the use of wing nuts and providing a tighter seal than any person could provide manually. The CLAW makes our vacuum trucks safer and more convenient.

For more information about our vacuum truck facility expansion plans or about the customization options that we offer for our vacuum trucks, be sure to contact us at Amthor International today.

DCC WELDING STUDENTS FIND GOOD JOBS CLOSE TO HOME AT AMTHOR INTERNATIONAL

Danville, Va., July 13, 2018 — A new fast-track aluminum welding class at Danville Community College is helping students find good local jobs after just a few weeks of study.

Six students who recently completed the first eight-week Welding GMAW class at DCC have already been hired by Amthor as the company expands its operations in Gretna. They are: Brandon Betterton, Steven Gauldin, Sheila Hughes, Stormy Hendrickson, Anthony Long, and Noah Richardson.

Amthor Operations Manager Ronnie Farmer, who started with the company as a tank welder when it began 25 years ago, teaches the non-credit welding course.

“We had a lot of fun. They applied their lessons really well,” he said of his first class.

Farmer will be teaching a second evening course 5-8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, August 27 – October 17 in DCC’s newly constructed welding facility, which features all new state-of-the-art equipment. Grant funding is available to qualifying students to cover tuition and may also be available for supportive services such as transportation assistance, child care, tool/uniform purchases, résumé assistance, and more.

There are no prerequisites for this course. The ideal student is interested in welding, likes to work with their hands, and wants to learn new skills. Students are encouraged not to miss any classes because of the fast pace of the training and the shortened length of the course.

Students who successfully complete the course will earn a GMAW Certification from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and are encouraged to apply for employment with Amthor International.

While taking the class does not guarantee an interview or employment, “Ronnie knows what Amthor needs and tailors his instruction accordingly,” said Amthor Human Resources Manager Adrienne James, noting that the company recently announced its expansion and has a need to hire more skilled workers, primarily in welding.

“We want to emphasize the importance of this partnership with DCC,” said Amthor Executive Vice President Brian Amthor. “We need skilled workers in order to grow our business. This class helps local workers gain valuable job skills in a short period of time so that we can continue to meet the growing demand for our products nationally and internationally.”

Amthor added, “Ronnie is a great teacher and brings a lot to the table. He is an asset not only to Amthor, but also to the college in sharing his experience.”

The Amthor International Train2Work course teaches Gas Metal Arc Fillet Welding (GMAW). It introduces semi-automatic welding processes with emphasis on practical applications and includes the study of filler wires, fluxes, and gases. At the end of the course, successful completers should be able to:

  • know the differences between the most common welding technologies and the GMAW (MIG) welding process
  • learn the different shielding gases and the common types of wire and their costs
  • identify the most important parts of a MIG/MAG welding machine
  • know how to change the machine parameters and the working and consumable parts of the machine
  • make use of the most common edge preparations and the different weld joint designs
  • know how to weld mild steel with different techniques, positions and joints
  • identify welding defects and know how to correct them
  • make use of different grinding machines
  • know and use the proper safety procedures and equipment

To gain additional skills, students can sign up for the full welding certificate or diploma program at DCC. More information on these programs can be found at www.danville.edu.

After completion of the course, students are encouraged to apply for employment at Amthor International. Students must go through normal hiring procedures including application, weld test, interview, background check, and drug screening. Amthor International does not guarantee employment or an interview after completing the course. Amthor International is an equal opportunity employer.

How to Operate a Dual Fuel Tanker

One of the most important things you can do after you purchase a new custom built Amthor tanker is knowing how to properly operate the equipment. This is especially true for dual fuel tankers. These special tankers feature two pumps, two meters, and two hose reels. This means you are doubling up on all your equipment from a single axle unit.

In a dual equipment tanker, you will need to engage each PTO and pump pressure valve. Make sure you are familiar with how to use the dry brakes in the rear and all of the bottom loading equipment on the curbside of the tanker before you make your first delivery. Additionally, you will need to ensure that the hose reel rewind, hose reel kill switch, emergency pump shut off and emergency fire release are all working properly before you put your tanker to work.

We encourage you to keep up on the regular maintenance of your vessel. Make sure you keep your PTO drive shaft greased thoroughly and check all your tie downs monthly to make sure they are tight. For more tank maintenance tips, be sure to speak with your sales representative or the manufacturing plant manager.
